MY EXPERIENCE IN REACTION ENGINEERING AND ADSORPTION (READ) RESEARCH GROUP

MY EXPERIENCE IN REACTION ENGINEERING AND ADSORPTION (READ) RESEARCH GROUP

I was in Reaction Engineering & Adsorption(READ) Research Group at the School of Chemical Engineering, Universiti Sains Malaysia for my Ph.D. research under the Leadership and Supervision of Professor Dr. Bassim H. Hameed.

What immediately caught my fancy was that Professor Bassim’s Reaction Engineering & Adsorption (READ) Research Group was a clear representation of a mini world. Nearly every part of the world was represented in that laboratory and is co-existing peacefully and in an uncommon care, helping one another in love. Each one was willing to render help to the other without stress. There were Malaysian students and international students from Iraq, Iran, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, etc working in uncommon harmony. I think Professor Bassim should indeed be given an award for such rare achievement.

As time went by, Professor Bassim’s personality and character for which students loved to work with him became clearer. He is a very accommodating personality, never angry at “stupid” opinions (in fact does not see any opinion as stupid either), outstandingly patient with every student and ever willing to answer “irrelevant” questions (though he does not see any question as irrelevant also). Professor Bassim was always available and accessible to his students.

For someone like me from a beautiful and very wealthy country like Nigeria, but never experienced constant electricity since I was born and never ever saw most of the equipment I was now using personally for my work, and who may probably never see them again to work with immediately I stepped my feet into Nigeria, I was in a terrible hurry to learn. Hence, I would request for those characterization tests of my samples which were directly relevant to my work Professor Bassim would generously approve of such tests. This is notwithstanding that most of these characterizations are quite expensive.

I most sincerely express my deepest appreciation to Professor Bassim and indeed, the entire Management of Universiti Sains Malaysia for given me such opportunity to become a proud scientist I have ever dreamt to be. THANK YOU ALL!

Co-pyrolysis of biomass with plastics and coal, for the production of bio-oils is reviewed.
The progress of catalytic co-pyrolysis on upgrading of biomass-derived bio-oils is introduced.

The functions of various acidic catalysts towards enhancement of bio-oil are addressed.

Abstract

Co-pyrolysis of biomass with abundantly available materials could be an economical method for production of bio-fuels. However, elimination of oxygenated compounds poses a considerable challenge. Catalytic co-pyrolysis is another potential technique for upgrading bio-oils for application as liquid fuels in standard engines. This technique promotes the production of high-quality bio-oil through acid catalyzed reduction of oxygenated compounds and mutagenic polyaromatic hydrocarbons. This work aims to review and summarize research progress on co-pyrolysis and catalytic co-pyrolysis, as well as their benefits on enhancement of bio-oils derived from biomass. This review focuses on the potential of plastic wastes and coal materials as co-feed in co-pyrolysis to produce valuable liquid fuel. This paper also proposes future directions for using this technique to obtain high yields of bio-oils.

Abstract
The past decade has seen a boom in environmental adsorption studies on the adsorptive removal of pollutants from the aqueous phase. A large majority of works treat kinetic modeling as a mere routine to describe the macroscopic trend of adsorptive uptake by using common models, often without careful appraisal of the characteristics and validity of the models. This review compiles common kinetic models and discusses their origins, features, modified versions (if any), and applicability with regard to liquid adsorption modeling for both batch adsorption and dynamic adsorption systems. Indiscriminate applications, ambiguities, and controversies are highlighted and clarified. The appropriateness of linear regression for correlating kinetic data is discussed. This review concludes with a note on the current scenario and the future of kinetics modeling of liquid adsorption.
